Most “biggest stream ever” stories are about a game or an event. This one was about a single person revealing a cosmetic item in a video game. On January 11, 2021, David Cánovas Martínez, who streams as TheGrefg, drew a peak audience that Twitch had never recorded, and he did it in Spanish. This is a sourced look at what happened, who beat it, and which parts of his business we could not confirm.

The come-up

According to Wikipedia’s TheGrefg entry, Martínez was born April 24, 1997, in Alhama de Murcia, Spain, and started his YouTube channel on January 30, 2012, at age 14. The entry, citing Spanish press, says he moved to Andorra in 2018, and that Forbes Spain ranked him sixth among the country’s top influencers in October 2020. Those details are second-hand: we read them on Wikipedia and did not open the underlying articles.

The night of the record

Fortnite’s Icon Series gives creators their own in-game outfit. PCGamesN reported that his skin reveal stream “doubled Twitch’s previous concurrent viewer record,” peaking above 2.4 million. The outlet put the earlier individual mark at Ninja’s 635,000, set streaming with Drake in 2018, and the earlier all-channel mark at the esports organisation ELEAGUE’s roughly 1.1 million (PCGamesN, January 11, 2021).

The exact figure comes from Guinness World Records: 2,468,668 peak concurrent viewers on January 11, 2021, over the previous individual record of 667,000 held by Ninja (Guinness World Records, March 31, 2021). Note that outlets disagree on Ninja’s old number (635,000 versus 667,000), which is why we cite each to its publisher.

Genbeta, the next day, added context: his own previous peak had been about 639,000 on December 2, 2020, for a Fortnite “Galactus” finale, so the January stream was almost four times that. It also said he reported 5.10 million total viewers after the stream, a figure that could grow through delayed viewing, and that he was not even the most-followed Spanish streamer at the time (Genbeta, January 12, 2021). Peak concurrent viewers measure one moment, not an audience; it is a hard number, but a narrow one.

The record didn’t last

On June 25, 2022, fellow Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos passed it, with more than 3.3 million concurrent viewers during the boxing event La Velada del Año 2, which Twitch confirmed on its official account (Tubefilter, June 27, 2022; NME). The pattern is worth noticing: a creator’s own skin reveal held the platform record for about 17 months, then a live event hosted by another creator took it.

The money

This is where the profile has to be honest about its limits. The record was a promotional moment tied to a Fortnite item, and we found no primary source for what the skin earned him, his sponsorship rates, or his income. We looked for company filings and credible financial reporting and found none we could open. Net-worth figures for creators like him circulate mostly on content-farm sites, so we deliberately print none.

The numbers, as of October 2026

Wikipedia’s infobox lists about 19.6 million YouTube subscribers and 12.3 million Twitch followers; the Twitch figure is cited to a page retrieved October 13, 2024. That is two years old and we did not corroborate it across three outlets, so treat both as unconfirmed approximations. Follower counts also say nothing about whether the audience is real or active.

What our checker would add, and why we didn’t run it

TheGrefg streams on Twitch, one of the two platforms our free authenticity checker can score. We did not run it for this piece, so nothing here states or implies a score for his account. You can run it yourself at /check/twitch/thegrefg; the methodology explains what it does and does not measure.

The bottom line

“Is TheGrefg legit?” has a firm answer on the one thing that is independently documented: Guinness World Records, PCGamesN and Genbeta all place a 2.4-million-plus peak on one night in January 2021, and Tubefilter and NME both describe Ibai’s 2022 peak as beating it. What we can’t tell you is what that fame is worth in dollars or euros today. The honest move with any creator is to separate the number a third party measured from the number a content farm made up.
