Angelo Smith, better known by his artist name Ibru, is an international Billboard reggae recording artist. Far from a traditional artist, Ibru tries connecting with audiences of all ages, walks of life, and backgrounds through his lyrics and deep, personal messages in his songs.

He is not apologetic in bringing awareness to standing up for the plight of normal people facing the struggles of life, and his time spent in the army and growing up in humble beginnings in the Bahamas certainly lets an authentic message shine through that connects deeply with his fans. His music has a balance, and his lyrics show his down to earth nature rather than trying to promote or flaunt an unrealistic lifestyle that many other artists today push with their music.

While Ibru’s unique genre is certainly a risk, his audiences’ deep appreciation for his music helped validate his style and showed him that there is a place for him and his music in today’s highly competitive music industry. But, like many rising artists, there was a point where Ibru was unsure if he’d make it.

When he was grinding in the studio pumping out music and gaining no traction or progress, it was very hard to stay optimistic. He admits that his biggest challenge was staying motivated, but he found it inside him to have the grit to continue making music. When he looks back on all that he’s accomplished as an artist, it’s easy to see how much his mental fortitude paid off.

Ibru always believed in his music and the message it was portraying, and it didn’t take long for major media outlets to do too. Jamaica’s number one entertainment source, The Star, cited Ibru as “The Bahamian artist ready to take on Jamaica” in August of 2019. For a Jamaican media outlet to give such credit to a Bahamian reggae artist was a massive accolade for Ibru, and was a huge momentum builder for his career. During his interview, he impressed with his high level of confidence when taking on a tough Jamaican audience.

Just as when he was virtually a nobody grinding through the slower times with his music, his confidence has always been present. He knows all of the hard work he puts in, and that the time he spends perfecting his craft and steadying his focus will always bring him success as long as he sticks with it. Up to this point, he has had no let up in him and will only continue to break onto the scene in reggae.
