Steven He is the comedian behind the “Asian Dad” character and the “emotional damage” catchphrase. His route to YouTube was unusual: he started posting as a deliberate plan to get an acting career that auditions were not giving him. This is a sourced look at that plan, how it played out, and what his channel’s public numbers look like in October 2026.
The plan
He told Tubefilter in 2022 that he was born in China, moved to Ireland at eight, trained as an actor at Regent’s University London, worked in theatre, and graduated in 2019 before moving to New York to act. Then the rejections: he said he had been turned down about 3,000 times in three years. “Every morning I wake up and submit for 20 things,” he said (Tubefilter, March 23, 2022).
His answer was to build an audience that casting directors could not ignore. He started posting comedy in mid-2019, first on TikTok, and treated each video as an experiment, studying why one took off and another did not. The YouTube channel was created on March 3, 2019, according to its About panel (YouTube, @stevenhe).
The breakout
The video that made the catchphrase was “When ‘Asian’ Is a Difficulty Mode”. By March 2022 it had 33 million views, and He told Tubefilter the “emotional damage” meme was behind the surge in his numbers from December 2021. In January 2022 alone his channel gained 1.2 million subscribers and 111 million views, according to figures Tubefilter cited from the tracker Gospel Stats, and he had 4.5 million YouTube subscribers by the time of the interview.
Did it get him acting work?
Some, and it is documented:
- In July 2023 Playback listed “YouTube star Steven He” in the cast of the feature film Magnetosphere, alongside Colin Mochrie, shot in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario (Playback, July 7, 2023).
- In September 2024 BYUtv announced him as a guest star on its sketch show Studio C, describing him as “known for his ‘Asian Dad’ character and ‘emotional damage’ catchphrase” (BYUtv via PR Newswire, September 25, 2024).
That is the outcome the 2022 plan described: an audience big enough that a press release leads with it.
By the numbers
On October 28, 2026 his channel’s About panel showed 1,077 videos and 5,192,585,214 total views. We measured his recent uploads as part of our study of 312 big YouTube channels.
| Measure (October 28, 2026) | Steven He | Typical entertainment channel in our study |
|---|---|---|
| Subscribers (as YouTube displays them) | 14.4M | — |
| Median views per long-form upload | 1.47M | — |
| Views per subscriber | 10.2% | 8.2% |
| Like rate (likes ÷ views) | 4.21% | 1.77% |
| Median views per Short | 836K | — |
| Days since last long-form upload | 39 | — |
The like rate is the number to notice. His long-form videos earn more than four likes per hundred views, over twice the median for the 56 entertainment channels we measured and in the top tenth of that group. A bought audience tends to look the opposite way: views and subscribers without reactions. His views per subscriber are also above the entertainment median.
The cadence has changed. The 15 long-form uploads in our window stretch from May 2025 to September 2026, about one a month, and his last long-form video was 39 days old when we looked. He posted a Short that same day, and his Shorts’ like rate matches his long-form one.
Subscriber growth over four and a half years, from 4.5 million in March 2022 to 14.4 million in October 2026, is large but gradual, which is what organic growth looks like.
What our checker would add
Steven He is on YouTube, one of the two platforms our free authenticity checker can score. We did not run it for this article, so nothing here is or implies a score for his channel. Run it yourself at /check/youtube/stevenhe; the methodology explains what it measures.
The bottom line
Steven He’s story is documented from both ends: an interview from his breakout year laying out the plan, and later casting announcements showing it worked. His channel’s public numbers show an audience that reacts far more than most entertainment audiences do. For brands, the thing to check with any comedy creator is the same as here: whether the format you are buying (long-form, Shorts or live) is the one that is active now. Our guide to checking a YouTuber is still active shows how.
